Unifying Staff

Teachers and psychologists agree, effective leaders are one of the most important elements of a well-run school. Administrators have many important jobs. But one of the most important jobs of all is seeing that the teachers can do their job. To do this, administrators must create a positive environment for teachers to work and share their ideas. For teachers to educate most effectively, they need to know that they have the adminstration's support. Teachers also need to work together. Adminstrators must encourage unity among staff unity among staff members and reinforce encouraging messages for their teachers throughout each day.

Here are some ways to create a unified, motivated staff:

  1. Publicly acknowledge educators.
  2. Bring in a treat (like candy or cookies) for teachers to share in the office, at lunch, or during meetings.
  3. Plan fun lunches or meetings—include a theme, an award, or food to create a fun work environment.
  4. Have a beginning/end of the year dinner to welcome/thank staff for the work that they do.
  5. Provide new supplies. Although it seems small, new board chalk or markers for the classroom can brighten the a teachers' day.
  6. Send teachers a “thank you” note for their work.
  7. Give teachers awards or recognition, like "Great Activity Planner" or "Good Teacher-Student Communication," to encourage and motivate.
  8. Have frequent teacher meetings—both one-on-one and in a group. This will help teachers know you’re interested and value their suggestions.
  9. Involve teachers in the decisions-making.
  10. Encourage teachers to take care of themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
